"Here lived and worked during 1863-1872 the great Russian scientist, creator of the periodic system of the elements, Dimitri Ivanovich Mendeleev 1834-1907." During this time Mendeleev was also working at the St. Petersburg State University on Vasily Island (he became professor there in 1865), and he soon moved to an apartment at that university (the present museum).
